019: The Trick to Avoiding Tangents and Rambling

In this post, I’m going to give you a phenomenal trick that I promise is going to make you look so much better on camera.

Here’s why. You know how sometimes you get on Facebook Live or IGTV, and you find someone who maybe you’ve never heard them before ever or someone who you usually really love, but you just catch them at a time where they are spinning off on a tangent or something like a story or something that doesn’t really relate at all, or they already got to the point, but now they’re having another point, and you’re trying to figure out what is the point of what they’re saying. All of that can get very confusing, and I’ve got a very simple trick that’s going to help you avoid that.

This little strategy is what I call the Know-Be-Do strategy and sometimes I sing it, the know-be-do-be-do, the know-be-no-be-do-be-do. It helps. It’s in a fun little tune. You’re welcome. I hope that’s in your head all day, but the know-be-do-be-do is going to help you to really get tight on exactly what it is that you want your audience to know, to be or to do as a result of your episode. It’s that simple.

What happens instead when things go wrong and people get off track or onto some tangents and stuff is that they are looking from their perspective. They are wanting to communicate something that they want to communicate. They’ve got a story to share or an idea that they want to get off their chest, but if you do not show up with the point, what is the point of this from the audience’s perspective, from the people that you are talking to, then you’re going to be all over the place.

Every time, listen to me, every time that you turn on your camera, I want you to think know-be-do-be-do, know-be-do-be-do.

Usually, we are doing the do and the be. That’s why we say those twice, know-be-do-be-do because knowing something, that’s sharing information or allowing your audience to have a new insight in something. To be is you want to give them an inspiration or motivation or you’re wanting them to see the world differently, to be somebody new. The third one is to do and that one is very popular actually because that’s what people want to communicate is like “Hey, here’s a new thing that you can do, a place that you want to shop or a list that you want to make or an action to take.” That’s kind of the call to action. Know, be and do.

As soon as you have one, do not have more than one, you’ll drive me crazy having all kinds of them because then you won’t know where you’re really going. You won’t really know how to land the episode if you’re feeling like you’re trying to tell them everything or if you don’t even know the point of the episode, that’s how people start rambling. When you get on camera, I want you to think “What am I trying to get my audience to know? What do I want them to show up as differently? How do I want them to be? Or what do I want them to do as a result of this episode?”

Now let me give you a little behind-the-scenes on this specific episode that you just experienced. I want to hack it for you. When I showed up for this episode, I knew that I wanted you to have know-be-do-be-do, know-be-do-be-do. I wanted you to have that in your arsenal. I needed you to know what that was. Now do you see how I also created it as a do for you, although it’s the same thing, right? It’s also that idea of having know-be-do, you’re going to think about it. Now I’m giving you the do. It’s still related to know-be-do, right. The theme is still the same. Now who do you need to be when you show up on camera? It’s somebody that has that one thing in your head so that you can be more pointed, right?

Do you see how you could have all three of those elements in one, but the idea is that you still have to have one thing. Do not try to have a ton of things because people aren’t going to be able to really follow along. Hopefully, this helped, and even the peeking behind the curtain of what you just experienced.

This is how I create my episodes. I think of what do I want them to know, what do I want them to be and what do I want them to do differently. If you can cover all three of them and that all three things are the same one thing, even better.

Thank you again and I’ll talk to you soon.
